Censor

England, at the height of the “video nasty“ era in the mid 80s. Enid works at the censorship board and evaluates horror films, but ends up going deeper and deeper into her own nightmare.

More

In the 1980s, films which the British Crown Prosecution Service considered particularly obscene and corrosive to public morals were labelled "video nasties" by a conservative media campaign. The list included mainly cheap euopean horror films, next to film considered classics today, like THE EVIL DEAD and Zulawski's POSSESSION.
Enid (Niamh Algar) whose job as a censor for the "British Board of Film Censors (BBFC)" it is to decide every day what films are socially acceptable does not only have to live up to her own expectations but also constantly finds her decisions questioned. Furthermorem Enid is traumatised by the mysterious disappearance of her sister and still hopes to see her again one day. When she finds herself publicly attacked for a film she certified, she, possibly due to the massive pressure she is under, believes she has spotted Nina in the latest slasher "Don't go in the Church". The more she finds out about the film and its director, the more parallels become apparent between the horror film and Nina's disappearance, and the deeper Enid dives into the world of the videos.
Despite all the obvious love director Prano Bailey-Bond has for the supposedly filthy movies and despite her stylistic references, turning the corridors of the BBFC into brutalistic nightmares soaked in crimson light, CENSOR is no ironic nostalgia trip but examines the theory that people who watch a lot of horror films will find it difficult to separate them from reality. At the same time the film satisfies the expectations of the genre and the involvement of Dan Martin (POSSESSOR) guarantees the sort of bizarre special effects angry letters were written to MPs back in the day.
