Daniel (Diarmaid Murtagh) spends his time in London without talking, because he has no one to talk to. He goes to the park with his dog during the day and is otherwise an onlooker of other people‘s communal activities. He has dinner with Bruno and repairs electrical appliances with the lights dimmed in his garage along the tracks. At nights he gets rid of the party trash on the playground so that the children can climb again the next day. We don‘t know anything about him besides how he lives now. But despite this, or perhaps because of it, we are close to him. The camera stays close behind him, follows him, even though he doesn‘t want to be followed. You almost feel annoying, because he just wants to be alone – right? We see what happens when you lose the last thing: first the shabby roof over your head, then Bruno. How you can become homeless, how you get dirty and stink to the point where others look at your strangely, how you can get into fights and land on concrete with a bloody nose. It‘s hostile out there – the deafening noise of trucks passing by, the crowds of people. The disorienting visual language takes us deeper into Daniel‘s emotional world. This is also further complicated when he finds a lonely boy (Woody Norman) on the playground who doesn‘t want to go home. A lost dog, a lost boy, a lost man – but tonight is a night to find lost things. BRUNO is a smart, gentle film in the best British tradition of social realism that portrays a person in a precarious situation and clearly shows how difficult it us to come out of it on your own. This film is sometimes brutal, sometimes magical, a big, bad adventure that you‘re happy to be a part of in the end.
