In the 1970s Silvio Berlusconi received 20 billion Lira from Stefano Bontade, the mafia boss murdered in 1981, to establish a private television station. Director Franco Maresco succeeds in getting the mobster and politician Marcello Dell´Utri to recount this story but in the decisive moment the sound cuts out. In his ironically charged film, the focus is less on the facts of Berlusconi’s mafia contacts and it is about the mafia culture in Sicily that Berlusconi frenetically celebrates and supports. Here Maresco encounters for example the “Impressario” Ciccio Mira, the street party with “neo-melodic” singers that takes place in front of the houses of the mafia bosses. Mira stands out. With each question about the mafia there is a small pause before he answers, the lies, that are just about to cross his lips, can be seen in his eyes. It’s fun to watch him as he invents stories and ducks questions he finds uncomfortable. His singers send open greetings to the “guests of the state” – the incarcerated Mafiosi. At his street party everyone asked thinks the mafia is great, but Mira only says that “we’re all friends here” and that Berlusconi “has many friends.” Mira comes across as completely corrupt that I first had to check if he was a fictional or real character. He’s real and obviously so are all the other figures in this terribly strange film that one leaves shaking one’s head.
