Far From the Madding Crowd

Bathsheba is a determined, self-sufficient woman who works hard making a living for herself. Having to deal with three admirers does make her life more difficult, though, and she is forced to make a decision.

What makes a good film adaptation? When we the viewers are invested in the heroine’s fate despite the well-known happy ending. Ang Lee is one of the few directors that accomplished this with his adaptation of Jane Austen’s SENSE AND SENSIBILITY and now Thomas Vinterberg (THE HUNT) has achieved this feat with FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD based on the Thomas Hardy novel of the same name.

Victorian England: The young Bathsheba (Carey Mulligan) unexpectedly inherits the farmyard of her recently deceased uncle and quickly turns from a farmer to an estate owner. Storms and crop failures prove to be the smallest of her problems when she realizes that three well-intentioned men from different ranks are pursuing her. Bathsheba is torn between the kind-hearted shepherd Gabriel (Matthias Schoenaerts), the well-off William (Michael Sheen), and the proud soldier Frank (Tom Sturridge) who have all fallen for her even though the self-sufficient woman has repeatedly rejected them.

The imposing panoramic landscapes that cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen captures are majestic and Carey Mulligan as the rebellious and determined Bathsheba proves to be a revelation. Mulligan watches on as her admirers are destroyed and we relish these developments with voyueristic delight. It barely fazes when the surprising melodramatic turns do not quite seem to reflect the inner logic of the characters.
