FERTILE MEMORY, the first Palestinian feature film that was shot on both sides of the „Green Line“ portrays two very different women: Roumia Farah Hatoum, a simple elderly widow living close-by Nazareth, and the young writer and intellectual Sahar Khalifeh in Ramallah, both holding their grounds in complex situations. Roumia holds on tight to her piece of land that Israel expropriated; the single mother Sahar, who holds feminist beliefs, becomes a member of the student movement in Bir Zeit University. In intimate and poetic observations of daily life, work, and discussions on art and politics, Khleifi unfolds a female image of both the resistance against the occupation, and the patriarchal structures in which both women live.
