Following their pitch black debut BLOOD SIMPLE, the Coen brothers loved to tell stories about the little guy who wants to climb up the ladder and miserably fails. Whether it‘s Jerry Lundegaard or Larry Gopnik: at some point the path of virtue becomes their downfall. SUBURBICON is a typical story by the Coens told from the vantage point of young Nicky Lodge. He has to look on as his family is attacked by two brutal men. The next morning, the perpetrators are gone and Nicky‘s mother isn‘t waking up. Normalcy returns to their home far too quickly and Nancy‘s sister Margarete (Julianne Moore in a double role) takes the spot at his father Gardner‘s (Matt Damon) side. It also quickly becomes clear to Nicky that Gardner had something to do with the attack. SUBURBICON is also about the first African-American family moving into the exemplary suburb in 1950s America right next to the Lodges. This leads to protests among the residents, and the fate of the Lodges is tied to the proper neighborhood nearing the abyss and revealing the ugliness of human nature. It‘s a typical Coen movie, though it isn‘t made with the brilliant handywork of their films: they only wrote the screenplay which George Clooney adapted and filmed with his longtime partner Grant Heslov. The two plotlines don‘t quite harmonize and the characters are missing some of the charm that even the Coen‘s weird assassins have. However, the atmospheric direction and the excellent cast make for a biting treat of a film.
