Zucchini is nine years old and is actually called Icare. But mom always calls him Zucchini and because he loves his mom he wants everyone else to call him that too. Ever since dad left mom has been drinking a lot of beer but Zucchini doesn’t mind. He collects the empty cans and builds a pyramid out of them. When mom gets mean he panics and mom falls down the attic ladder.
The head of the “Home of Fountains” says that mom is in heaven and that Zucchini has to live there from now on. All the children that live there can’t go home and most of them are nice. Except for Simon. He calls him “potato” and steals his things. But Simon irritates all the kids there. “We are all the same here. There’s no one left who loves us,“ he says. And that makes him sad. He’s actually alright.
There’s excitement in the air when new girl Camille comes to the home. Zucchini falls in love with her a bit and they soon become very close friends. If it wasn’t for her mean aunt…
ZUCCHINI is fantastic and deserved the Oscar nomination. Because the stop motion figures have big heads and eyes and are mostly caring towards each other it's easy to assume that it’s a sweet film for little kids. But when you notice that the kids have dark rings around their eyes and that the French-Swiss production isn’t afraid of talking about why they are in this home in a relatively clear way, the supposed kitsch becomes something beautifully multilayered. The story is by turns funny and heartrending and is told in 66 fast but unhurried minutes. Sophie Hunger’s music adds a lot to the film as well as the dash of adult humor (Camille reads Kafka’s “Metamorphosis”). It doesn’t condescend to the young protagonists, takes them seriously, and can therefore appeal to children of all ages. Men are asked if their weenie explodes sometimes though, so be prepared for that.
