Kerstin closes her eyes and dreams of an encounter with her boyfriend in the forest. Then her phone vibrates and infiltrates her dream like unsatisfied heart beats. Kerstin looks at who is calling, is disappointed, and doesn’t answer. Her mother appears on her doorstep unannounced a short while later. She has separated from her partner and is now a bit lost so she moves into the shabby house somewhere in Brandenburg where her daughter and her roommate Maya . The place has little privacy and a tattered cinema that Kerstin wants to renovate. Maya beds a series of men and mom tries out some dating sites while Kerstin still believes that her man will reappear one day. Viewers slowly come to realize that her man has been gone for a long time and the relationship wasn’t very harmonious in the end. Kerstin’s dreamy flashbacks become increasingly disharmonious as she starts living more in the here and now.

Luise Brinkmann’s BEAT BEAT HEART belongs to the new German mumblecore movement. The narrative is pleasantly normal, the dialogue and many scenes are improvised to the point where there are some small contradictions in the plot because the actors don’t know how their counterpart is going to react– or who they actually “are.” This leads to a freshness that’s very rare in German cinema. Despite the obvious artificiality of the theatrical game BEAT BEAT HEART is astoundingly realistic, moreso than many carefully-written screenplays.
